Benefits of Opening a TPFCU Checking Account

TPFCU Checking Account

No Minimum Balances or Service Charges

Only $1 is required as a minimum daily balance to keep your checking account open. Certain ATM transactions may have a surcharge, but you can avoid fees like this by using a TPFCU ATM. That means:

  • No Annual Fees
  • No Withdrawal Fees
  • No Fee for Using a Check (Including Cashiers Checks and Paper Checks)

40,000 Surcharge-Free ATMs

The People’s Federal Credit Union has 40,000 ATMs across the U.S. Your money is always available, no matter where you are. Our TPFCU-branded no-surcharge ATMs are located throughout the Amarillo area. In addition, we have agreements for no surcharge ATMs at other financial institutions like banks and credit unions, local retailers, and colleges. Refer to our list of Amarillo Area ATMs and our two nationwide ATM networks, MoneyPass and Co-op.

*Also, we have branch offices in Amarillo (Hillside and Pecos), Canyon, Childress, and in the Pantex Plant building.

Earn Interest and Quarterly Dividends

Each checking account earns dividends of 0.10% each quarter (our version of cash rewards). Dividends are based on the average amount of money in your basic checking account through the end of the quarter, current income, and available earnings; thus, they’re subject to change. Accounts also have an annual percentage yield (APY) of 0.10%. Amounts from compounding interest are added to your balance as they are calculated.

How to Apply

Opening an account with our convenient credit union in Texas is quick and easy.

To apply for a checking account for your everyday spending requirements, we’ll need some personal information including your social security number. You can open an account in person by visiting one of our local branches on business days.

Opening your checking account is free. However, if you’re not already a member, you must pay $25 to start a savings account before you are eligible (all members must have a savings account). This $25 minimum opening deposit buys you a “share” of our credit union and thus makes you a member.

Membership Requirements

Although our checking and savings account options are available to most Texas residents, our specific eligibility requirements are based on whether you live in our service area. This includes Canyon, Childress, Hereford, parts of Deaf Smith County, and Amarillo, TX.

You can also qualify if:

  • A family member has an account with us.
  • You work for or retired from one of our member companies.
  • You’re a member of an association in our Field of Membership.

*If you’re not sure you qualify for an account and are interested in our in-person and mobile banking services, please call 806-359-8571, email Department.mbrserv@tpfcu.com, or visit one of our local branches and one of our team members will be happy to help.

FAQs

Overdraft and non-sufficient funds (NSF) fees may apply. For the latest information on this and other transaction fees, please see our Rate and Fee Disclosure document.

Yes, we provide up to $300 in overdraft protection. With each overdraft, account holders are charged $22. However, you can opt out of overdraft protection if you don’t want it.

As long as you use a TPFCU ATM, you are not charged for withdrawals, transfers, and other transactions. If using a non-TPFCU ATM, you’ll be charged by the financial institution that operates it; we’ll also charge a $1 fee as we encourage all members to use our ATMs located across Amarillo, Texas, and nationwide.

No, but credit monitoring is still a good idea. A Credit Systems check is performed to verify you haven’t had a credit alert on a charge-off account at another financial institution (having one can disqualify you from using a debit card but not necessarily from having an account). We also have special accounts that allow electronic charges for bills and other withdrawals (you can use this to build a positive credit report or for the simple convenience).

Yes. The funds in your account are insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) and up to $500,000 using Excess Share Insurance, which is free to our members. In this day and age, fraud protection is a valuable commodity, no matter your account type.

If you need assistance with your secure checking account, mobile banking, or any of our other products and standard features, contact TPFCU at 806-359-8571 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Friday, or email our Member Services Department at Department.mbrserv@tpfcu.com.
